Correction notice issued to the NCOP for training providers of lifting machine operators

SHE Alert 1, 2 February 2026

On 30 January 2026, the Chief Inspector published a Correction Notice to the National Code of Practice for Training Providers of Lifting Machine Operators (“NCOP”), as incorporated under the Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015, in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 (OHSA). The NCOP was originally published in Government Gazette No. 5588 on 29 November 2024 .

The Correction Notice introduces several important amendments that directly affect training providers and the implementation of the NCOP:

  • Training providers may continue issuing carry cards until a licensing body is formally established.

  • The licensing body must be established by 29 May 2027 to enable implementation of clause 5 of the NCOP.

  • References to “re-certification” have been replaced with “relicensing”, clarifying that no new certificate will be issued on relicensing for the same learning component or qualification.

  • Certificates are issued only once, with no certificates issued on relicensing.

The corrections provide greater clarity and certainty for training providers during the transition period before the licensing body is established. In particular, the ability to continue issuing carry cards ensures operational continuity while the regulatory framework is finalised.

Training providers and employers should take note of these changes and ensure their internal policies and practices align with the corrected NCOP.
