SHE Alert 13, 25 April 2025

Notice published for the amendment and expansion of the boundaries of the declared Vaal Triangle Air-Shed Priority Area.

On 25 April 2025, the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment published a Notice of intention to amend and expand the boundaries of the declared Vaal Triangle Air-Shed Priority Area to include the West Rand District Municipality and the remaining area of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, as provided for in terms of section 18(1) read with sections 56 and 57 of the National environmental Management: Air Quality Act 39 of 2004.

The Vaal Triangle Air-Shed Priority Area was first declared by GN 365 in Government Gazette No. 28732 of 21 April 2006. The areas identified for expansion are categorised in the National Framework for Air Quality Management in the Republic of South Africa as areas of concern due to poor air quality, especially elevated levels of particulate matter. A description of the existing and proposed extended boundaries of the Vaal Triangle Air-Shed Priority Area is set out in the Schedule to the Notice.

Members of the public are invited to submit written comments on the Notice within 30 days from the date of publication of the notice in the Government Gazette (i.e. on or before 25 May 2025).
