Matthew has experience in all forms of general Corporate and Commercial practice as well as a keen interest in the specialised fields of music copyright and licensing, advertising and the Internet of Things (IoT). He has a passion for bringing people together and for finding solutions that better equip parties to realise their commercial aspirations.

As an Associate at Tabacks, Matthew has assisted clients with various advertising campaigns both within the borders of South Africa and the rest of the continent, from a compliance and regulatory standpoint as well as with regard to artiste management/collaboration.


Matthew has assisted stakeholders in the music industry with company restructuring, copyright licensing and guidance on copyright enforcement. He has also assisted in domestic and international commercial transactions that have varied in complexity. Some of Matthew's recent engagements include:

  • Assisting in merger, acquisition, structuring and restructuring transactions of entities (domestic and multinational) in the fields of freight and logistics, mining, gambling, entertainment and advertising

  • Providing legal assistance to both official sponsors and unofficial advertisers in respect of world cup and other sporting event campaigns

  • Drafting agreements for and advising clients in the fields of retail, fast food and liquor in respect of compliance, licensing and artist management and performance

  • Drafting and advising in respect of IoT, application and software development agreements and outsourcing agreements for clients specialising in advertising, e-commerce, IT and social media

  • Drafting and advising in respect of music licence agreements and contract negotiation between artists, record companies, music collecting societies and trade associations
