Lourens van Staden
Lourens obtained the B.Com and LLB degrees from the University of Stellenbosch in 1973 and 1975 respectively. He joined the Department of Justice – State Attorney’s Office in 1976. He was admitted as an attorney, notary and conveyancer in 1978. He joined Deneys Reitz in 1980 as a professional assistant, and became the head of the Commercial Litigation team in 1991 until his departure in September 2000.
From 1 October 2000 he was involved in the establishment of Tabacks. Lourens is a senior Commercial and Corporate Litigation practitioner and has been involved in all aspects of Commercial and Corporate Litigation for both listed and unlisted clients, including disputes arising from Mergers & Acquisitions, schemes of arrangement, capital restructurings, structured finance transactions, stock exchange disputes, share buy-backs and the like.
Lourens has consistently been ranked as one of the top, and on occasion as the top, Corporate and Commercial Litigation lawyers in South Africa by Best Lawyers®. He represents a range of listed and international companies in confidential arbitrations in South Africa and abroad.
Lourens' current caseload includes:
Representing an international company in negotiations regarding the bulk supply of electricity by Eskom in terms of a proposed NPA;
Advising clients in respect of appearances before the Nugent and Zondo Commissions of Inquiry;
Defending a Hong Kong listed group against claims by the liquidators and BRPs of mining companies in South Africa;
Advising an Indian-based state bank in disputes with the South African Reserve Bank; and
Representing a major global resources company in arbitral disputes with the purchasers of certain of its South African-based operations.
