Ernest’s practice primarily focuses on Tax and Corporate Commercial Law, both domestically and cross-border. He has significant experience advising clients on cross-border tax structuring, regulatory issues and wealth planning across a wide range of industries. His clients include listed companies, international sportsmen, trusts, funds and financial institutions.

Prior to joining Tabacks he has been involved in:

  • Advising local and international entities on tax structuring involving inbound and outbound investments;

  • Advising various clients on taxation aspects of group restructurings and mergers and acquisitions;

  • Assisted international and South African multi-nationals in the structuring of their intellectual property;

  • Assisting ultra-high-net-worth individuals in their estate and succession planning;

  • Advising financial institutions on the implementation of the common reporting standards and other tax regulatory issues;

  • Advised trustees as to their fiduciary duties.

Ernest joined Tabacks in July 2018 after spending more than three years at an international tax and legal advisory in Hong Kong. He was admitted as an attorney in April 2013 after completing his articles at a well-known boutique firm in Cape Town.

  • Advising international sportsmen on the tax structuring of their image rights and income earned abroad;

  • Assisted with tax advice on the structuring of the IP licensing of the technology underlying an international payment platform;

  • Advising South African company on the export, tax structure and market entry into the Far-East;

Mergers and Acquisitions (Tax):

  • Advising multi-national corporation on the tax implications acquisition of a South African mine;

  • Advising local South African companies on the tax implications and structuring of a merger;

Private Wealth:

  • Advising high-net worth individuals on their structure of their local and international estate;

  • Assist South African expatriates with tax advice on financial emigration;

Tax Regulation:

  • Design and develop internal procedures for a multi-national company to assist with the classification of clients for the implementation of the Common Reporting Standards;

  • Assist numerous clients with the classification of their entities or structures for FATCA and Common Reporting Standards;

  • Provide tax and regulatory advice on the structure of a peer to peer lending platform;

Corporate & Commercial:

  • Drafting and structuring of sale of business agreements;

  • Structuring of funds;

  • Structuring of En Commandite Partnerships and Shareholders Agreements;
